Introduction to Prescription Diet Pills

Prescription diet pills are increasingly getting popular among the people who are looking for effective methods to loose weight. There is variety of diet pills used world over. Some of them are over-the-counter drugs while others are prescription diet pills. In fact, these prescription diet pills are effective method to reduce weight if taken in conjunction with proper diet plan and regular exercise.

Diet Pills are in use since 1960s and 1970s. However, these weight loss pills prescribed in those days had addictive properties. Therefore, doctors stopped prescribing them. In present times, there are varieties of FDA approved diet pills which are safer to use. Xenical, Meridia and Phentermine are some of the popular FDA approved diet pills.

Phentermine, a sympathomimetic appetite suppressant, was approved in 1997 by FDA.   This drug is used for short term obesity treatment. This is the most prescribed weight loss drug in USA.  This medicine works by stimulating hypothalamus, part of brain.  This affects certain neurotransmitters to reduce the appetite.

Approved in 1999, Xenical is a lipase inhibitor.  It restricts the absorption of fats in body.   Then in 2001, FDA approved another drug called Meridia. It is also an appetite suppressant which acts on the neurotransmitters in the brain to reduce appetite.

Regarding prescription Diet Pills, FDA has issued number of regulations about the method of prescription, kind of condition they can be prescribed, drug combinations, dosage and the duration of prescription.  Taking any of the Prescription diet pills against the FDA approved norms can have adverse effects on health and metabolism of the body.
